Charitable Giving and Life Lessons

From the desk of Tom McGannon, Chairman, Royal Oak Civic Foundation

The holiday giving season started a few weeks ago. No doubt you have already begun receiving a number of inspirational philanthropic appeals in your mailbox, by e-mail, and on your cell phone (both calls and texts). You also may have been engaged by cheery volunteers as you shop at your favorite retailers or sales associates asking you to round up to the nearest dollar on your purchases to help an important non-profit organization.

You are a generous person who knows that charitable contributions change outcomes and change lives.

Thank you.

Thank you for your generous vision to help others.

Thank you for being part of the $557 billion donated in the U.S. last year to benefit human services, education, religion, public society benefit, and grantmaking foundations. It is very impressive to think about how all of our charitable dollars add up to such a significant dollar amount and the impact that flows from our incredible, philanthropic resources.

I am always intrigued to ask donors of any dollar amount what their inspiration was to make a charitable gift. I have found that most contributions were inspired by a specific experience and a life lesson learned.

What are your life lessons and how do they impact your charitable giving? What life lessons have you learned from living in Royal Oak?

Did you know that you can support our vibrant community by making a gift to The Royal Oak Civic Foundation? This organization is the non-profit fundraising arm of the City of Royal Oak and provides grants to civic organizations that provide essential services and community programming to keep Royal Oak growing.

Did you know that the number one reason that people don’t make a gift is that they are not asked. I would like to ask you to consider a gift this holiday season to support your community through the Royal Oak Civic Foundation.

Check out the Royal Oak Civic Foundation website to see the civic groups that you can support. Examples of recent community impact grants fueled by charitable donations include funds for projects that:

  • Address important community needs like food insecurity
  • Provide low-cost, senior transportation services to medical appointments and grocery stores
  • Develop greenspace and park projects
  • And more …

As you slow down and take a breath to focus on what’s important in your life this holiday season, think about your life lessons and support our city’s greatest needs fund or find a match with one of the many organizations that you would like to support through the Royal Oak Civic Foundation, a 501 C 3 charitable organization.
