The Rewards of Giving Back to Your Royal Oak Community

Darian Neubecker Family
Trustee Darian Neubecker and his wife, Sofia, knew that Royal Oak was the right place to raise their three children.

Giving back to your community is one of the most powerful ways to make a difference in the lives of others and to make for a better place to call home.  When Sofia and I were searching for a place to start our married lives and grow our family certain qualities of Royal Oak stood out to us and made it easy to call Royal Oak our home: the togetherness of the Royal Oak community; the extensive park system, and the cohesive knitting of the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

None of those qualities would be possible or present in Royal Oak without the support and giving over the years by the residents that call Royal Oak home.  When we give, we are not just helping individuals. We are improving the entire Royal Oak community and making it a better place for all its residents. Charities like the Royal Oak Civic Foundation play a huge role in supporting those in need, but they rely on the generosity of others to continue their work. By giving, we become part of something bigger than ourselves and contribute to lasting change in our community.

Giving to charity also creates a ripple effect of kindness. When people see others giving, they are more likely to be inspired to help as well. This builds a culture of generosity and compassion, making the community stronger as a whole. When a community comes together to support those in need, everyone benefits.

Lastly, giving back is personally rewarding.  I have been fortunate enough to volunteer my time, experience and resources with the Royal Oak Civic Foundation, a foundation whose sole purpose is to meet the needs of the Royal Oak community and its residents.

I’m especially proud of two grants the foundation gave last year. For the Royal Oak Senior Center we funded yard and landscaping services for 16 seniors in need. When the library installed a book vending machine at Woodward Corners Market, the foundation paid for books.

It feels good to know that we are making a difference, no matter how big or small. Donating to a charity provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment that money alone cannot buy. It reminds us to be grateful for what we have and encourages us to use our resources to help those in need.

In many ways, generosity brings people closer and strengthens the bonds between neighbors, families, and friends. In the end, giving is not just about helping others—it’s about creating a more caring and compassionate Royal Oak where every resident has the opportunity to thrive.
